Put steps into a hillside ?

Our home is partially underground. We would like to build steps to go up on the upper side of the house that can become a swing/patio area. It’s very rocky with hard AL clay 😞. Suggestions for the best way to accomplish?

I feel your pain. My back yard is mostly AL clay. When we built a retaining wall, we rented a backhoe for a day and then used our tractor for the rest. In our experience, wet was easier to dig up but oh so messy. Just throw those clothes away. If you can get access to either a bobcat or a tractor with a bucket close to the width you want, that would be ideal. Then you could just dig it out a little bigger than the size you want the steps. I would seriously consider hiring someone to dig it out with a machine rather than do it by manually. If you're set on manually, you are probably going to need a pick to break up the ground and a lot of Aleve after you do.
