Medium Density Fiberboard is an engineered woodproduct made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin, binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure.

    Medium Density Fiberboard

  • MDF is medium density fiberboard, in other words it is sawdust held together with glue. Great for some parts of furniture, and trim, but doesn't have much structural strength so screws can come out of it with stress. ie: on a cabinet frame where the door hinges are mounted. Pretty much all furniture is produced with some elements of MDF in it, and just covered with veneer. (a paper thin layer of wood to camouflage the cheaper MDF inside. That can be ok, as long as it's not the structure needed for strength.
