I would be reluctant to do this project with cardboard because it is not strong enough to hold a lot of books. Can't you find something stronger to use, or use less books!
Becky, did you see this done here on Hometalk? If you did, at the top of this page, there is a box that says "Explore". That may have the very project you are looking for.
Why not try and create a book case from old books you no longer require? I've seen it done, it looked great too, but sadly dont remember how they did it.
I don't know if cardboard would hold up to the weight of books ?
the old fashioned way of cheap bookcases , was to use bricks or cynderblocks ( painted , if you want ) and planks of wood.
Crates from the draft stores works well , too !
