How can we build a run for our dogs & cats that they can't get out of?

We want to build a safe space for our animals to be outside that they can't escape from. Eg: Dig under, go up over, etc... We are planning on closing in our back patio, like a screened in porch. Then we want the run to come off of there and run the length of the house.

  • This will need to be a custom feature. I would hire a contractor to help you design and install this wonderful fun house for your pets. Look into using a modified version of snake fencing in order for them not to escape and keep them protected.

I have 3 dogs, 6 cats, a canary and a dragon myself. They all love being out in the yard and rolling around in the grass.

What kind of budget do you have, Tami? Large, small...... give us an idea so we can come up with something appropriate. Waiting to help!

Google "catio". Look on Youtube. Read a lot. If you have money, hire a good contractor. I want one too! ;-)

I've had 3 homes and used Pet Safe Invisible fence units. They come in two types - one you bury a wire just under the grass at your boundary, the other is a radio control that allows you to control the size of a circle where your pets can roam. They wear collars that beep when they get close to the boundary and if they do not turn back they will get a slight shock (it's adjustable for timid or tough dogs). It does take a little training with your dog so they know the beep means move away, but it works great.

Thanks but with so many furbabies this wouldn't work, I would need Octopus arms

Tami, here is a pageful of ideas. I had a hard time finding something for both dogs and cats. The large picture on the page, however could be adapted. Use heavier wire for the walls and roof. Put it on a cement pad for the digging. (You could always cover the cement with faux grass for a more comfortable feel). You could "classy it up with wood stain, cat tree, things like that. You could get rid of the door and incorporate an opening into your patio instead of the door. Hope this helps, good luck.
