In all honesty the doors are the hard part. The cabinets themselves are the easy and fastest part. Are your cabinets stained or white?

colred doors on white cabinets will give you a vintage vibe. Colred doors on stained cabinets look different depending on what color you choose for the doors.

if you are just overwhelmed with too many cabinets just break it down in segments. So many cabinets a month and in three months you could be done without having to work on the project nonstop.

I would not chalk paint my kitchen cabinets. It is a lot of work and has proven not to last. Chalk paint is usually waxed, not a good combo for the kitchen. I have done my bathroom vanities and I can tell you that is also a project, but not on the scope of the kitchen.

You need to clean the cabinets completely, with a good cleaner degreaser. Then prime with a good stain blocking primer. Use a paint sprayer if possible, if not a good mohair roller. Put another coat of primer and sand again. Then apply a good paint, such as Sherwin Williams Emerald Acrylic or Snap Dry door and trim r Benjamin Moore Advance acrylic. Behr Marquee is also a good paint.

If you use these paints you will not have to put poly to seal.

It is a very big job no matter how you do it. The key is good prep and lightly sanding between coats and a good paint.

I am so intrigued by this! I personally haven't seen this but would love for you to share with us if you do.

  • Hi Jolene,

I agree that you should not wax your kitchen cabinets after chalk painting them. We recommend using Gator Hide which is our strong, water resistant poly.

It is super easy to paint your kitchen cabinets with Dixie Belle.

Step one : Clean with White Lightning

Step two : Paint one to two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral paint

Step Three : Use Gator Hide for a water resistant finish.

I am attaching some kitchens that have been painted with Dixie Belle Paint so you can see the outcome.

Also, we did have a series of LIVE videos on a step by step tutorial of how to paint your kitchen cabinets. If you would like to watch them....
