Hi Marilyn, I have always just cut min to whatever shape I want it to be, without any problems - it's a pretty tough shrub.........But as it's that old, and maybe hasn't been trimmed at all, I think I would wait till next spring before hacking into it. just a light prune, so you don't upset it.............
