We have old wood style wood panelling in basement after many years of seeing how ugly it was finally last summer sanded,( Buy attachment for shopvac if you own one worth it for large area). prime and paint. It looks like shiplap now. I kept all grooves adds character and looks fabulous. Then we changed 50 year old linoleum floor. I painted it white . Was not hard to do at all.
We bought a home that was built in the 70's and stayed that way until we bought it a couple of years ago....our 3 season room had green and white paneling and orange and gold shag rug !!!! We just painted it , no standing or primer used... We painted it light gray , it looks GREAT !!! We painted the trim work as well , it took on a slightly different shade of the same color, looked like we bought coordinating paint. We were very happy with the results. We also took out the discolored old shades and put up white mini blinds and took out that ugly rug and put down new
Definitely paint. One of my sisters had a home with a family room that had 1970s style panelling on one wall. They primed it and painted it white and it transformed the room entirely, it also added tons of light to the room by reflecting/bouncing light from the windows around the room.
I will also chime in on the paint! I sanded, primed and painted a panelled bedroom and it held up through the 8 years I lived in that home.
The previous home had a panelled family room. For that installation I went whole-hog wild! I rented a 2-part paint sprayer for a specialty architectural paint. That paint had a cream base coat with several different colors suspended in it. The 2-part sprayer mixed those 2 materials in the head of the nozzle and when sprayed on the wall, the suspended colors SNAP onto the wall, breaking the suspension material. The end result were walls that looked exactly like granite panels! It was gorgeous and the paint is used in hospitals, etc. so it's not only scrubbable but is anti-bacterial. BUT, for the life of me I can't recall the brand and can't locate it on Google. If you're interested, I'll continue to track it down.
Do know, however, that 1 must purchase a minimum of 5 gallons of this specialty paint AND that it costs several hundred dollars.

You can paint it, or if you don’t like the grooves you can put wall liner on it and then paint.

We bought the textured white wall paper and put that on and then painted it the groves were not easily noticeable.

have painted lots of panelling. looks great. use an oil base primer first and they any type of paint.
