I want to turn my bedroom closet into a walk-in closet but it’s just an average size closet with a shelf unit. Can this be done?

You can either build it out into your room or extend it from the back into the room behind, or both, depending on how much space you can steal.
Consider knocking out a wall at one end borrowing space from bedroom!
