What works best for us here in Maryland is to divide them in the spring, when they start to emerge.

This link may help you decide which way to go fall or spring.

I divide most any time of year , spring before leafing out probably best, need less water ,They're indestructible ! Use good sharp spade . Water well after division . Should be divided every 3-4 yrs .I cut back to ground in fall so they're not ugly through winter . Some leaves may get cut off when dividing , don't worry .
