What you can do immediately after planing bulbs is put down a wire mesh large enough for your plants to grow through in the spring. The squirrels cannot chew or dig through that!

you can make or purchase 'BULB BOXES' --- made from 1" or 1/2" 'rabbit wire; about 6" cube ... they last a long time and the bulbs will grow tops/roots right thru the wire.

www.brecks.com garden catalog carries them .. you can also search 'where to buy bulb boxes for planting flower bulbs' ... several companies offer them ... and the photos give you an idea of how to build them !

plant in the plastic open weave baskets (like strawberries come in)--they can't dig through them--have used with tulips and it worked.

would depend on how the strawberry box is made -- some are clear solid plastic w/ a few holes, others are an open weave box that has ventilation squares on all sides -- but there is no 'top' ... usually just clear wrap. would take two put together.... and the solid clear plastic are not suitable without a lot of 'tweaking' ...
