Is a thick laminate flooring more important than a thick underlayment?

In my search for laminate flooring, I have found 7mm flooring for 79 cents. Is it necessary to buy the 65 cent underlayment? Will better underlayment really help with longevity of the laminate flooring?

    Yes

The underlayment is your moisture barrier so the better the underlayment, the better the protection against the moisture that will destroy your floor.

The underlayment for laminate is not a vapor barrier. It allows for floor movement since laminate is a floating floor.

The underlayment for laminate is not a vapor barrier. It allows for floor movement since laminate is a floating floor. Most laminate floor manufacturers recommend the type of underlayment to use. The 7mm flooring just means the thickness of the surface not the substrate. The thicker the surface the longer lasting it will be. Also some laminate flooring surface is thick enough it can be sanded and refinished at least once. 7mm leaves nothing to refinish, scratches can show easily. will swell when wet. You get what you pay for.
