How do I know when to trim my shrubs or which ones to cut back totall?

We have a variety of shrubs and I have been told in the past that some should be trimmed in fall others in spring. Then there are those that require a complete cut back. Does anyone know of a comprehensive listing of when to trim and which ones should be cut back? Ideally it would have pictures of plants as we lost the names of many and some are from previous owners. THANKS

Kevin...You are so right...there are so many. I do not like to suggest the internet for very much but you can Google flowering shrubs and when to cut back, roses, etc. and I believe you can get a good answer. Good luck!

Generally, if they bloom in the spring, cut them back right after blooms fade. If they bloom in the summer they can be cut back in fall or very early spring.

check with your local Agriculture Agent office -- they may have a 'Master Gardners' club that would be glad to help you ... some plants bloom on 'new' growth and should be pruned right after blooming; some bloon on 'last years' growth .... and you don't want to be cutting off next year's blooms!

Take some photos on your phone and stop by a garden center and ask.
