Do astilbe and lirope need to be cut back? How far??

I haven't had a garden in a long time and don't Know if my lirope and astilbe need to be cut back? Is there anything else to do to winterize the garden?

I mow my lirope off in early spring before it starts to regrow.

  Yes, mine line my flower beds. You could also use a weed whip. Mine are getting pretty tight so am considering thinning them although it will be a big job. I live in north Florida so they grow fast and furious.

  yes, the root system makes a pretty solid mass ... or a really sharp butcher knife -- actually my weapon of choice with these as well as other tight rooted plants

Lirope should stay 'nice' most of the winter ... it will 'fill out' more with new growth in the spring; https://www.almanac.com/plant/astilbe -- actually I leave mine alone ... I don't mind 'bare' stems in the garden; think it lends 'texture' and interest in lieu of a flat surface.
