Gas? This is not a suitable cleaner at all for crochet hooks, as it will be very hard to remove the residue and odour. Try baking soda or vinegar first, then wash with regular hand soap.
I would making a damp paste with both the baking soda and the vinegar together, then rub it on the affected area with a small sponge, toothbrush, or even q-tips, depending on how large or how stubborn the rust spots are.
Wet a paper towel with vinegar then wrap the rusty area. Leave on for a few hours. You can also use a cleaner called CLR (Calcium LIme Rust Remover) the same way. It works great. You will want to wipe the needles with some sort of oil once they are clean to keep them from rusting again. My husband uses WD-40, you would also use mineral oil or vegetable oil. Just wipe a bit on and wipe off so you can knit without oil stains. Good luck!
