Best clear finish for frequent used kitchen table?

Last year I stripped & sanded my light wood kitchen table. I then applied 4 coats of clear polycrilic, leaving proper time in between each coat to dry. After about three months the surface became a bit sticky and really absorbs the print from the newspaper each morning. Why? Is 4 coats to much? I plan on sanding and redoing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

With help from my husband I stripped an antique dining room table. Stained and then sealed with polyurethane. That was 30 yrs ago, 6 kids and large extended family holidays. Just now seeing a couple small spots that will need touching up. Used Minwax stain and polyurethane. Good luck.

Hello, Probably needs a Spirit based varnish (one that the brush is not cleanable in water) Maybe a Boat Varnish ? Do check if suitable on label for table top!

I agree with Donna. My father refinished his mothers claw foot table in the 70's and put on multiple coats of polyurethane and I have it now and it still looks like it was when he refinished it years ago. It will still need care with hot dishes, but it is really easy to clean, just a wet rag and buff dry is all I ever do. This was a table that was in the attic of her garage when she passes in the mid-sixties and she was in her eighties.
