I have a modified salt box house. The roof is often mistaken for an A Frame. It has dark brown vertical Cedar siding that is 36 years old and has rot, holes from wood peckers and driller bees. A year ago, we had a dark brown metal roof put on. What kind of siding would be recominded with this kind of house.

needs to cost less than more.

This is a picture from probably 10 years ago and the siding was in better shape and we had not placed the metal roof.

there are 11 windows on the higher side and only 4 on the low side

I'd go for Hardi plank. Can be precolored and is insect proof and rot proof. Wii be your last siding job.

If you want to keep the same look, Hardie also makes a T-111 and a board and batten look that comes in 4'x8' sheets. These will install fast and last forever. No more carpenter bees because Hardie is concrete fiber board.

Id also use James Hardie siding. Maybe some cedar shake style to break up the large amount of flat surface. But I would also think about using some false field stone for interest and texture.

Look up “Dustless Blasting” or “Sandblasting cedar”. I have the same issue and I’m going to look into the possibility of blasting the old paint off, and maybe even staining it a different shade.

If you want a new look do vinyl . EASY MANTAIN I don't think woodpeckers will like it

We just did our house a 10 years ago and went from cedar to a very good vinyl cedar shake (we got the staggered shakes) It is made by a company called CertainTeed (spelling may be wrong) This is an amazing product and has held up better than I expected. It is rated to 150 mph winds, is thicker than regular vinyl, will add a great eye appeal to your salt box style home. Comes with a 50 year warranty against fading, peeling, wind damage, hail damage, etc. I love the look and sage green color to this day. Check them out before you buy Hardi Plank. My son has that and it is not doing well in our climate (Northern Wyoming) No flickers and bees at our house.

Posting a photo to show you how it looks after 10 years. The color is sage green but it is looking more grey today because it is cold and cloudy. They have about 25 colors and styles to chose from.

As a contractor in Oregons Willamette valley, I have to agree with Gwen and Katrina. Hardi plank types,(cement fiber products) and Vinyl are only as good as the quality of your house wrap envelope and the installers competence! Hardi and vinyl both cover and( Hardi holds paint extremely well), but both products will hide the damage of water penetrations until it begins to show as black spots of mold on the interior sheetrock! By then there is usually structural damage by rot and subsurface Fungi growing on your subsiding and framing. As a very sad reality, a high percentage of my work, is repairing rot damage on houses with the 2 mentioned sidings, on houses that are less than 20 years old, many less than 15 years old. There are some installers that take their installation techniques seriously and do the proper requirements. Unfortunately there are far more unqualified installers that don't---BUYER BEWARE! Anyone that has Hardi siding with exterior trim around windows and doors had better make sure the proper flashings were installed,(hopefully cedar, Boral, or Azek trim was used), if not examine each weep hole on every window for water damage and penetrations. Most vinyl trim and flashings are poorly designed and rely ??, I guess on the styrofoam material they use behind the siding to shed the water that seeps in. Hardi has a good fire resistance-(looks like you live in a wooded area), but another good fire proof siding is Boral. they have several siding profiles to choose from and its a very impressive product. Cedar has always been a good siding with the proper upkeep and coatings, the woodpeckers, starlings, and squirrels, ??, a good pump-up pellet gun? Do your research on the products and the potential installers and best of luck.
