How can I refinish my original floors myself?

Do you think it's important for every room to have the same flooring?

Please do not paint those beautiful old floors unless there is no alternative. You would be better covering up with a sheet or plank vinyl (not glue down) until such time as you can properly finish those glorious old floors. Old original floors are a great selling feature should you decide to sell at some point.

Rather than try to replace the floor or cover the floor with cheap looking laminate or vinyl (that's all laminate is - a vinyl laminated to a cheap board) that will eventually have to be replaced, use that money to hire someone to sand the floors for you. Sand then stain.

I go with Naomie, go with a plank vinyl that clicks together, many of them even have a rubber layer on the bottom. They are easy to apply, only three tools are needed, a mullet, a sturdy straight edge and a cutting tool like you cut carpet with. This would be durable waterproof (most laminate isn't) and easy to take up if you want to refinish the hardwood. We have hardwood in the living room, dining room, hall and two bedrooms (the bedrooms are slightly lighter in color). Our kitchen is tile, and the back room is wood look tile planks. As long as they look good together, the floors don't have to be exactly the same. If nothing else, do a room at a time and get boxes of what you want as you can afford it and do another room when you get the time.

thank you so much for your advice everyone! I like the idea of the laminate with the rubber back. My floors are not made of a nice wood and if I had someone sand them I don't know that they are worth it. I've had beautiful original oak floors redone professionally and THAT was worth it!! They were gorgeous!! This floor is not a nice wood.
