We don't water ours before winter.
Not really. They have deep long roots and find water on their own. Basically they fend for themselves.
I've never watered trees before winter. I guess it depends on where you live. I did find these articles, I hope they help.

if you're in a drought area yes but this time of year there should be enough rain to keep those roots nice and moist before winter arrives.
Thank you for all your input!!!
Lyn,
If your tree is a new transplant, I would give it some generous water while the leaves are still on.
If it hasn't been watered like this all season, watering it now won't do it any good. But if it has been watered all year and is healthy, there is no need to water now. It should be fine.
