baking soda and vinegar ... and a LOT of elbow grease ...

OR a glass bowl full of ammonia ... in an oven that has been turned off, but is still 'warm'... let set overnight and the fumes will soften the crud .

baking soda -- sprinkle a liberal amount on the bottom tray; put just enough vinegar to make a 'paste' -it will foam and bubble'; leave it until the foaming etc., has stopped and then scrap the bottom pan with a spatula; you can use the same on the door glass ... just leave the door open or it will all run out on the floor!

for the Racks --- put in the bottom of your bathtub, cover with HOT!!! water, toss in 2-3 fabric softener sheets; leave over night; same with the burner grates.

  • I definitely recommend baking soda and vinegar. It's labor intensive, but is just as effective. The instructions Landsharkinnc are what I would recommend as well.

    Hi Ann,

Although it is technically a chemical, use the bowl of ammonia in a warm oven ( not a turned on oven) overnight. The fumes will ease the removal of anything baked on.

You can also clean your burner grates with them in a plastic bag, use a 1 gallon sturdy bag and 1/4 cup ammonia-do this outside and overnight. Rinse well, it is the fumes doing all the work, not the wet ammonia.

If you use the baking soda/vinegar method, you'll be cleaning out the baking soda residue from now until when you can no longer see it, it never seems to be completely gone.

The racks, line your tub with a towel to prevent scratching, add hot water and a couple of fabric softener sheets.

Commercial oven cleaner contains lye. Homemakers used to make lye from ashes.

I use Simple Green from Walmart or Menards. It is non-toxic and not harmful to people or pets. It deodorizes and disinfects too. I love it, that is all I use for cleaning!

A paste of baking soda a water, smeared over oven floor, etc. and left to sit for 24+ hours can be dampened and wiped out easily.
