What is the BEST way to get RUST off?

I have rust on the top of the poles from my above ground swimming pool. I have soaked them for over 48 hours in CLR and I still have to scrub & scrub them with a scroch pad really hard to get it off. Is there really any liquid that will soak it off or will I have to scrub & scrub no matter what?

if CLR didn't do it, Try ZEP -- it's 'stronger' than CLR --- or this ... but this is your last resort .... https://sciencing.com/clean-rusty-steel-muriatic-acid-8319296.html

Ok thank you! Hadn't heard about ZEP! I'll use the muriatic acid as a last resort!

Use a commercial rust remover made specifically for rust and a wire brush if they are heavily rusted. You will have to apply polyurethane or something to cover the bare metal no matter what you clean them with.

soak a rag with white vinegar then wrap around pole, saran wrap or plastic wrap to keep rag from drying out, check it and re-wet rag with vinegar until rust is gone, my son uses vinegar to remove rust from old tools, don't know why it wouldn't work on this. Can you clear coat it with a clear coat spray after rust is gone or spray paint them for they don't rust?

I'll try the vinegar! Thank you! I hadn't thought about spraying with a clear coat afterwards? I'll give it a try! Thanks once again!

See " www.everbritecoatings.com ". Your problem is caused by chlorinated pool water's effect on metal.

After cleaning, you'll need to completely seal the metal.
