The right way to hang pictures on a wall

Lay them on the floor or bed and play around with the pattern to find something pleasing. It is best if the top of the picture frames are the same height in a room. At least the top pic in a grouping, not every frame

We measure from the top of the wall to where you want the top of the picture to be. measure from the top of the picture down to the type hanger it has and add that to the measurement and that is where to put in the nail or hanger. If it is a wire type hanger, pull it up to the height it will be when it is hung for the measurement. I have found that the easiest way to have the picture where you want it. We always put the pictures we want in a grouping on the floor until we find the arrangement we want for the size of the wall we are putting them on. That way you can move them around, add or subtract pictures, etc. without putting all kinds of holes in the wall.

Lay the pictures on the floor on top of a large sheet of paper. Play with it until you create a layout you love. Then trace around each picture and hang the paper on the wall. Place the picture hangers where they need to be and take the paper down. Put the pictures on the hangers and admire!

One mistake almost all homeowners make when hanging pictures is to put them at the wrong height. You art should be placed so the average "eye level" is about at the center or a little above center of the art itself.

If hanging more than 1 piece, play with the pieces on the floor to choose what to hang together. Consider: Keep the art boundaries even with furniture edges, window frames, or similar.

Start by hanging the largest piece first. Place that piece on the wall at your determined "eye level" and line it up with some arbitrary boundary you've chosen such as "I want the grouping centered behind the couch". For that, measure the couch and mark the wall at the center point. Work off that line to hang the grouping equally on each side of center. Example: the largest piece will be left of center. Measure (arbitrary number) 6" out from center for the right side of the frame. Then you would measure 6" to right of center point for the other frames to end up centered behind the couch.
