Leaf stepping stone for the garden.
I had alot of lettuce in my garden this year. My kale grew large and my mustard leaves were enormous. This gave me the idea to make some stepping stones using what I had in my garden. Stepping into my garden to retrieve veggies is always a balancing act. Not anymore. I have somewhere to step and I don't have dirty feet anymore.
Quick dry cement
  • I took a few large leaves off of my lettuce. I wiped them down and dried them. I laid them flat on a piece of newspaper
  • Using an old container I added quick dry cement and water. Using a paint stir stick I mixed the cement to a very thick consistency .
  • While the cement was wet and using a popsicle stick I smeared the cement onto the leaf.

Adding cement
  • After adding a skim coat of the quick dry cement, I piled up another thick coat to raise the height of the step.
  • Sometimes I had to wait for one coat to dry and then mix up another small batch of cement and add to the leaf. If you start with a big "glob" it won't dry properly.

Slowly remove the leaf
  • I made sure that the cement fully dried. I waited a day to remove the leaf. I carefully pulled back the leaf from the cement. This took patience. A few times I had to use my finger nail to lift up a few pieces.
  • Once I pulled the leaf away from the cast I wiped the stepping stone with a damp rag.
  • I took a paint brush and just brushed some clear lacquer over the stone.
  • Let dry for the day.

Success!
I am sure I will be making more next year.
