How to deadhead Hydrangeas?

Do I need to cut the dead blooms off my Oakleaf Hydrangea? It bloomed profusely in the Spring and all through the summer. In fact, it started out white (4 yrs old,) and during the course of the summer the blooms turned a dark pink. I am confused because I have read different answers about pruning. It’s October, can you help me?

Yes, I always cut off the flowers before winter, but I don't cut the stems, so yes deadhead them. The stems on many hydrangeas hold the hidden buds for next year's flowers. Happy gardening -Linda

I never cut mine except for what I bring inside.
