This article says to bring it inside. Maybe your husband would prefer the bedroom? You are supposed to trim it back before bringing it inside so that could help the size. Here's the article that I found that should help you.

We have 5 hibiscus plants, we leave them in the ground all winter, they come back every year. We live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Yes they are a type of bulb called a rezone, but I find they grow quicker when left in the pot, when I hag them up they seem to take many weeks before I see any growth but when left in dirt they seem to begin growing immediately when brought out in the spring.

I don't take my tropical hibiscus into the house until the outside temp during the day stays in the forties. I put them in the garage at night and bring them back out during the day and they do fine and continue to flower. I have an area in my back room that we put my eleven plants with a grow light to keep them healthy, even the light in my huge south facing windows was not enough. They took a little more watering than when they were outside because of the lower humidity, otherwise they were fine. Check your plants closely for any kinds of bugs on the leaves or you may end up with a bad infestation. Treat them before you bring them in. I hope this helps you. I have a number of larger pots, my hubby made castor platforms out of marine plywood and good quality castors so that all we have to do is wheel them up to the back steps, carry them up three steps and wheel them to the windows. The platforms make it so much easier! All my large pots are on them.
