What to do about my front door?

I have a metal front entrance door, and I don’t like the way it looks on the inside. It is the same as my wall color, which is fine, but my oak woodwork creates a stripe around it which bugs me. Is it okay? Or should I paint it a color? Should the paint color extend to the outside of the door? Or just the inside? Or should I change the whole door to an oak door? Please be very specific, I am hoping for lots of opinions. I am attaching photos. Thanks in advance!!

Ugly stripe!

  • You can paint the door to make the trim less jarring. Black would look lovely and be closer to the color than the white. Personally, I love painted doors because they always look clean. ;)

I agree that black would look great. I would just paint the inside of the door.

Does the oak trim run throughout the room? It’s hard to tell from the photo. Do you love the oak color? If not, painting your trim might be a great idea.

It looks like you have a pretty rug - could you pull a door paint colour out of that?

You have a beautiful wood door in your entry, You can stain or paint to match that door. You can mimic the grain of the oak as well with the wiping stain and seal it too.

I would definitely paint the trim around the door and the little bit of baseboard. I think I would paint it white - and then you could always paint the door for a pop of color.

Paint it the same color as other doors. Or use gel stian to wood grain it. Black would make it look like a hole in the wall.

Since you have another wood door right there in your entryway - it looks okay and ties it together. If it bothers you, you could paint the wood white to blend in more.

Painting your front door black is the latest trend . But it actually has been around for a very long time and lends a very chic look . My Son did this and it looks fantastic ! He also painted all his interior doors black as well and does it ever look nice !

Pull a color from your rug or furniture and paint it.

If you want to highlight the door, make it one of the focal points of the room, or draw attention to it, then paint it a different colour than the walls. If you want to downplay the door, emphasizing some other area in the room instead of the door, then paint the trim and the door the same colour as the walls.

You are most welcome. When the project is completed, share some pictures here on Hometalk.

Paint the door. You can try to match the oak color, but even a different color will be attractive.

Most of the black doors in the link in Rose's comment, 'work' because:

1/ there is more than one door

2/ the door is trimmed with wide white millwork

3/ there are half walls of white panels flanking the door

4/ a balance is achieved from the strong contrast of the heavy black with the crispness of the white.

As William noted, having only one black door on its own often looks like a hole in the wall.

I can see you have an oak door in your picture and a bookcase shelving. I personaslly would change it to an oak door. I think it would give the area warmth and charm. The metal doors are nice, but the oak doors are charming and stylish! Hope this helps
