A lot of people are using Styrofoam tiles these days. The problem with taking down a popcorn ceiling is the possibility of asbestos/ Styrofoam tiles come in many designs so you can pick the one you like to enhance your home. It really is fairly easy to remove the popcorn from your ceilings. You don't need much for tools-a water spray bottle and a scraper, a ladder, newspaper or plastic on the floor, and some time. To me covering the popcorn up is more difficult than just getting busy and removing it once and for all! Messy, but very rewarding.

The other way is to just drywall over the ceilings with 1/4" drywall.
