How do I install a 50 or 100 amp line?

Yes, you definitely need an electrician. There is a lot more involved than you think. You can still dig the trench, though. That will save some money. Get some estimates and when they're there ask how deep they would want the line. I would guess about 18 inches but there may be a code for that in your town. I would also install a tracer wire so it can be found if you ever have to dig it up again.

You should be able to do some parts of the install like digging the trench, pulling your wiring, prepping the site.

Call your utility company for all the specific wire gauges, underground conduits, depth of trench, etc. They will tell you how deep to dig and will come out to check for underground utilities along your proposed trench line.

Call the county for permits and inspections as you complete each step.

When you have completed what you can safely do, call in the pros to complete the hook up.

You are dealing with local codes and electrical codes, permits, inspections.. Electric Company would not install a second meter without work being done by a licensed certified electrician. Tying into your home load center, an addon box with proper amps, #6 wire would need to be run 18" to 24" underground through PVC pipe to the garage, a breaker box in the garage. You need an electrician. Not a DIY job.
