Using a primer first will help your paint stick to the wood.
Chalk paint doesn't need primer
It's always best to use a primer. Especially on wood as it prevents any wood color from leaking through like mahogany wood. Primer allows paint to adhere better.
Take a good photo to the paint department of the home improvement store and ask them what will work for you. They have the best selection, the most up-to-date materials and most important, the most informative sales staff to get you what you need for a professional job.
Thomas: while it's not spray paint, this product is easy to use and you won't have drips like spray paint. ...and you do NOT need a primer!

Hi Thomas,
Painting with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint does not need a primer. The only time we recommend putting a primer on is if there is a slippery surface such as tile, glass, slippery laminate etc... We have what we like to call a Problem Solver called Slick Stick.
If you have just a regular wood piece of furniture or kitchen cabinet then no you do not have to prime. Just clean well with either our Dixie Belle White Lightning or any other degreaser type of solution. Then start painting!

Hi Thomas, you'll only need a primer if your wood is still fresh, which will cause bleed through or if it's been varnished.
