Earlier this week, I was helping a friend empty a storage unit and I came across several little treasures that were destined to end up at Goodwill. My friend was overwhelmed with the task at hand and told me to take whatever I wanted…so I packed up a few boxes and squeeled with joy all the way home! I just love FREE STUFF! One special decor piece that I could not wait to get my crafty little hands on was a pair of wall sconces from probably 15 years ago. I got to thinking, I bet there is a cool way to update those tired sconces. Hmmmmmmm.
Fun Storage Unit Finds!
I couldn’t wait to start working on the sconces, I had the perfect update for them! Usually sconces are made to hold a candle, people hang them on the wall in their living room or dining room…but my update idea is to turn them into succulent planters and hang them up on my patio! So here we go…ready?
First, I dismantled the sconces so I could frost the glass candle holders with Aqua Sea Glass spray paint. This stuff is RAD and its SO EASY to use! I just turned the glass upside down and sprayed until I got the desired effect I was looking for.
Dismantled sconces, ready for spray paint!
The metal part of the sconce was a hammered gold color, to look like patina…I thought pewter would definitely be an great update and make the sea glass look better, so I spray painted those too.
OK, we’re almost done! I love these spray paints, they dry so quickly, it makes for a great “instant gratification” project! The glass holders were dry in just 10 minutes (if that) and the metal pieces were dry in less than half an hour. I basically made a sandwich, and then came back to add my succulents. (wink)
Pardon my photography, I know its not great. I added a black backdrop so you could see how the pewter and aqua colors pop…its a little sloppy, but I’m sure you get the idea. My plan was to sell these patio sconces, but now I’m not sure…they look so great I want to keep them!

I estimated this project at $20, but to be honest it was a lot less than that because I had leftover paint and river rock for future projects.

Very creative!!! Does anyone remember how to make a floor lamp out of crutches? I saw it on Hometalk but forgot to save it Thanks for your help. Judy

    Beautiful, thank you for sharing!

I'm wondering if the sea glass paint is opaque enough to allow candlelight to glow through, either a real candle or battery operated light? I've never used the sea glass paint. I don't get much natural light in my 'beachy' room for a plant.
