To the jar--nothing. To the lid-nothing. To the seal? Can cause deterioration.

Alcohol does not do anything but clean the glass, unless it pertains to using it with something else when doing a project.
It would be really clean. If you are doing this to the outside, it will remove any surface oil or grease. If on the inside, the same too, but make sure to rinse it first before storing any food to remove any alcohol residue.
Funny you ask about alcohol. It will not do anything harmful to plain glass, it may remove paint if your jar is painted. Way back in the day it used to be classy to add a round of brandy soaked writing parchment to the top of sweet preserves like jams and jellies before they were sealed. It was believed to help prevent bacteria from growing.
