I built my kid's bed using a frame made out of 2x4s (or 2x6s) standing on edge instead of flat to prevent bowing and sagging. Make that frame slightly bigger than the mattress. Then add a nice wood or plywood to the 3 sides that show. Legs can be fastened to the corners. Footboards and headboards can be used to incorporate the legs.
