Go to a local nursery and ask them. You need help from someone local to your area, to give you the best advice. Let them know what is the issue with your lawn that you want to correct, weeds, brown , sparse , bald spots...

Walk around your neighborhood and see what plants or landscaping seem to do well and try to mimic that. If you want to grow grass, here is how we did that -

  • It depends on what the problem is... lawns need a lot of water, so that could be the issue. You may also need to add some grass seed to fill in empty spots. Fall is a great time to do that. Good luck!

we had problems this year with extreme heating and would not spend the several hundred dollars to water the lawn. it was dreadful looking by end of August.

we bought peat-moss, top soil, and grass seed that is called ''water saver grass seed""

put down peat moss, spread grass seeds, and lightly top with topsoil.. good idea to do if you know it is going to rain that week. using your garden hose, gently water a few minutes each day that it didn't rain..

takes about 2 - 3 weeks and we now have a lush green lawn...

yeah, for a couple of months until the snow comes.... but hoping the spring lawn will look good, if not we will repeat process again.

easy and not expensive. good luck hope this is what you were asking help with. if plants, ask your neighbors, they may be willing to share cuttings or extras if they are pruning ...

  • What zone are you in? What type of grass do you have? What exactly makes it "look bad?"

A lawn requires maintenance. Lack of proper watering or in some cases too much water may be the problem. Here are general fall lawn care tips.

I am in Zone 9 and grass is still growing here. Leaves on oaks are starting to turn. Time to aerate the lawn and reseed.

  • What is going on with your lawn to make it look bad? Are there weeds, patches of grass....?

Im in south afrika very warm weather here. Its start of summer and have lots of weed and strange creeping grass all over. Its not easy to take it out. I need a strong grass that will nominate the weed and this creeping grass. Cant really water a lot there is restriction on watering.

    • Gotcha. Your drought is worse than ours here in CA. My vote is to go for clover. It will over take most weeds, is soft underfoot and nice to roll around in. Does not need to be mowed as often and is drought tolerant. Adds nutrients back in the soil too. Look around and see if you can find it where you live.
