Make Permanent Chalkboard Art With Paint Pens

I live in a 100+ year old home with an unfinishable basement. Guess where the laundry room is? Yep...down in the basement, where I often feel like I am in a dungeon. I painted the inner walls a sunshiny yellow a few years ago (the outer walls are simply the stone foundation), but wanted something fun to put ON the wall.
I found a really wonderful, large (20x24) frame at the thrift store and painted it a bright red. I thought I would make some chalkboard art using a "laundry limerick" I had written a while back.

Then, I spray-painted a 20x24 canvas black to serve as the background.
I designed how I wanted the lettering to look, and then printed it out in sections on paper. I then used an exacto knife to scrape guidelines into the paint on the canvas. I only cut the basic lines of the letters and then used my printout to look at as I free-handed the rest using the guidelines I had cut into the paint.

I used Sharpie Paint Pens to do the lettering, and they worked very well.
I absolutely LOVE the finished product! It really makes my dungeon-of-a-laundry room much more inviting, together with the yellow walls. I'm hoping it makes me want to go down there more often--if so, I might stop actually needing that magic wand to do my laundry!

I know you said you freehand painted the interior of the letters, but is there a name for the font you based the word "laundry" off of?

@Lara I love the project but don't you need to be an artist to cope with the lettering?

@Barbara Norman I don't think so. Though some fonts are definitely more difficult to do than others. If you feel you'll have trouble, you can also use transfer paper to trace it on to your canvas.
