Onions?

Do I plant onion bulbs now for next spring? If so, do I have to make sure the soil (in my grow box) is damp until it snows, or would that rot the bulbs?

  • Go ahead and get them in the ground. Snow acts as blanket and insulation. Everything above will die off but will pop up in spring. Make sure they are in well draining soil. These will help.

    Hi Geri,

You can plant them now if you like, we are in zone 5 and do this. Another good plant overwinter is garlic!

Yes, plant them. DO NOT WATER! This will rot the bulbs. Mulch with straw.

Water the onions immediately after planting with a soaker hose. The soaker hose will force the water down into the soil for deep watering.

It depends what part of the country you are growing in. Here in central Wisconsin we till and plant in the spring.

You can plant them now if your ground has not frozen. If you are using a planter box you need to determine if your winters are so cold it would kill the bulb. In the Rocky Mt west for example, you should wait until spring. If you are south of the Mason Dixon line it would probably be ok as the ground does not freeze solid all winter. If you are in another country, look at a USA map and judge approximately south of I 40 for planting now or not.
