I have a fig tree plant . Should I put in the fruit cellar for the winter. It gets very cold in the winter months? And I think I water it too much. The leaves turn brown. Thanks!

Brown leaves usually mean not enough water ..yellow leaves - too much water ...

Even in the winter it requires some light. Do you have light in your cellar?

  • How big is it? What zone are you in? Even in winter it needs light. South or west facing window. Only water when dry. Stick your fingers in the pot at least 2" down. If dry give a little water, if damp, check again in a few days.

I have 3 in my yard, but in ground and I am in Zone 9. My girlfriends in other zones have in pots and bring in during the winter months.

It all depends where you live (zone) and what kind of fig tree plant you have, here's a link to help you sort that out.

Hello. I live in WI and was just given one. From what I read is that the fig tree should loose all of its leaves and go dormant. I am putting mine in the basement and cut down on watering. Then in spring I'll bring it into a more sunny room and start watering more frequently. I wish you luck and me too!

Thanks everyone for the info on the fig tree it is a seed from figs we bought from Sam's. My daughter lives in Clementon, N J and her tree is full and green. My basement is finished so it is warm. Maybe I should put it in the spare bedroom and keep it cool. Thanks again!!We are in Oh and it gets real cold here the older I get the less I like winter.
