Hello Mpr,
How to prune and trim versus the crepe murder can be a spirited discussion. Many commercial landscapers routinely do that severe cutting back of the tree. Many folks in the garden world -don’t understand this.

I prune mine after they drop their leaves in the fall, before the first frost. I cut the branches at the "knuckle" of each branch and they come back nice and full in the spring.
Thanks to Vimarhonor for including the link to this article about "crepe murder." Crepe myrtles do not need pruning except for removing crossed, damaged or dead branches. After blooming their seed heads can become heavy and droop. Only remove those seed heads and you will get a second set of blooms. Cut the second set of seed heads and, if your weather stays warm, you may get a third set of blooms.
Crepe myrtles are available in a range of sizes: from miniatures less than 3' tall; dwarf up to 6'; semi-dwarf to 12'; and small and large tree size. Their shapes can be upright, rounded, spreading or weeping. It is much better to buy the size and shape of plant to fit your space. Pay attention to the mature height and spread of plants when you buy them. If a plant is expected to be 6' wide at maturity plant it at least 3' from a wall or fence.
