Sounds a bit risky to me, and if it falls down it might take some of the wall with it seeing as you have only one stud for support. Can't you use it elsewhere, or find something different to use as a towel rod?
Can you put the stud in the center and add two more hooks on either side in just the dry wall?
If you use a toggle or, I call them mollies, the dry wall should hold it. Use a few to distribute the weight.
I actually wrote a post on this exact thing! I was trying to hang a shelf, but the studs were in the right spot... but like your project, it was heavy. Here's WHAT I WROTE!
I'm gonna put the stud o. The middle and use anchor bolts to and extra support. Thsnk you for your help and advic
