I use 1 part powdered Borax (found in the laundry aisle) and one part sugar (white granulated). I keep it in an old frosting container marked with the contents. You need only a very small amount. I came home one day to find my counters covered with ants!! YUCK!! I sprinkled a small amount of the mixture, took a walk around our neighborhood, came home, and they were ALL GONE!! :-)

Borax is a good way to kill them, just find out where their trail is and share their nest is or where they're coming from and put the borax close to it.

Just make sure that no kids/animals can get into it

Ants follow the scent they leave. The first ant discovers a food source and then mark the route so the other ants can follow him. If you cover this scent with something like baby powder or anything that is an alkaline they get lost and can not find their way back. If they walk through it the scent is also absorbed so they can't mark the trail.
