  • To get rid of the smell first you have to find the source! Vinegar will kill the mold spores and fix you right up. So start hunting around to find the smelly spot and clean it up.

if you own your home consider installing an 'air exchange' in the basement. otherwise

consider buying or borrowing an ozone generator commonly combined in an electrostatic air cleaner. they are used in auto shops for removing offensive smells from vehicles and book stores to eliminate mold and mold odours. be very careful and be responsible. the idea is to saturate an enclosed area with ozone, which can kill you and

your pets. a vehicle can be safely closed up. a home is more difficult. a room can be made secure and it must be aired out when ozone is shut off. for a basement you would want to be away from the home for a few days. when returning the whole house would need to be aired out before entering.

  • A dehumifier is your best defense! But for a short-term and temporary solution, this all-natural Febreze-type spray DIY is a great way to mask the smell. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly

I agree with Holly get a dehumidifier. We got one on our enclosed patio and I was amazed how much liquid it pulled out of the air. Removing excess moisture will cut down on the mildew smell.

After the the dehumidifier you need to water proof the basement. Find where water or moisture is getting in and fix that area. Ugh Lock makes a paint on product. We used it on our cinder block foundation years ago. Went on like thick paint but we haven't had even one problem.
