Prep work is critical. You may have to strip the finish or at least hand sand all of it to accept a binding primer & top coat Fine sand paper, tack cloth. Remove all the hardware first. Number hardware & doors. Store hardware in a marked egg carton.
Buy premium brushes even for the primer.
Be conscious of you brush strokes, so they go with the grain.
The higher the gloss of the paint, the more durable it will be.
Take your time & keep the dust at a minimum.
Make sure it is good and clean, if using chalk paint (easiest) pick the color you like and start painting, you will want to mask or remove the hardware first
Is it really old? Are you sure you want to paint an antique piece?? It is trendy but so difficult to remove..Looking at local repainted furnitire I think some of the colors others chose are just hideous.
Chalk paint and finishing wax , ( either clear of antique ) it is sooo easy to use , goes on easy and goes a long way . And there are so many colors to choose from. You can make it look new or vintage, whatever look you're going for .
I love using milk paint on antique pieces. Chalk paint is also another good option. I shared some of the differences between the two here http://beautyforasheshome.com/chalk-paint-vs-milk-paint-which-is-better/
