After trapping them you need to find out how they are getting inside and fix that. Mice can wriggle thru tiny holes. And they will chew thru almost anything. They don't like steel wool. So you a SOS pad to plug up a hole and then seal it well.

Not all cats are mousers and will watch the mice run past and not move a whisker. Traps are more reliable. There are humane traps too. Check farm supply stores for traps that will catch multiple mice alive and relocate them away from your residence

If you live in the country and have children or pets, every fall you are going to have to deal with mice. Those little critters sneak in while unsuspecting pets & children are going in and out. Think about it, you don't watch the door threshold while you are going into or out of your back door. That said, you can buy traps (peanut butter works great) or the green blocks that the mice will nibble on and go back to their nest to die. Both work really well. If you have a dropped ceiling the blocks can be put inside it. If you have cupboards that do not go all the way to the ceiling in your kitchen, that's another great place for them to be put. Just be careful with the blocks and keep them where children and pets can not find them.

Fox urine or coyote granules are a great deterrent! Sprinkle around your foundation & especially around anywhere the little menaces might try to come in. Works great for mice, chipmunks, moles, skunks, even cats.. pretty much any animal that could be prey. I heard it even works for deer. But never tried it. don't worry.. you won't smell it once it's down. You can get it on Amazon, and at a lot of home improvement or garden stores.
