How do I keep my potted plants alive in the winter ?

I live in Texas. I’ve got a screened porch. I have some plants in pots that can’t handle temperatures under 50. I thought about bringing them inside and maybe using a grow light. I’m not sure if that’s the best idea.

Well I'm in Texas too so if you have a screened porch they should be fine. If it get's really cold you can always cover them during those periods with sheet material. Or depending on the size you could make a wood frame with plexi glass to cover them. Would work like a greenhouse for them but really they should be fine especially if this area get's sunlight. If it doesn't then I would recommend moving them outdoors on those nice days that tend to surface over winter.

A grow light sounds like it might be a good idea. I don't bring my plants in the house: bugs. I put them in the garage. My garage isn't heated, but I can cover them when the temperature drops. I need to make sure they don't dry out or are over-watered.

Depending on the plant, and the temperature difference, you may have to gradually acclimate your plants to being indoors. Its a gradual process, so start early. If you rush it, they may go into shock, drop all their leaves and die. Talk to a local plant nursery about your plant, and your local climate.

Hi Mary. I have the same problem here in Florida. I just purchased a wire shelves stand. I'm going to move all, or at least most, of my plants onto it. When the temperature starts to drop, I'll be covering it up with a clear plastic tarp. I'm hoping it will keep the plants warm enough to survive. Don't know if it will actually work, but I'm being optimistic😊 I was originally going to cover the screen room using the clear tarp and Velcro, but I can't get to the top screens safely.
