The Variable Star Quilt Block is quite simple to make but it looks quite spectacular especially if you choose your colors right. It allows for a lot of possibilities particularly because the centre square can be changed up to suit a theme or you could fussy cut some fabric to make it really pop.

This block measures 10" when finished and you can find complete cutting measurements and more detailed instructions including a step-by-step video over on our blog here - https://www.alandacraft.com/2016/03/31/quilt-block-variable-star-quilt-block/

Here's what you need:

  • 1 x 5½” square – for the center square
  • 4 x 3″ squares – for the corner squares
  • 4 x 3½” squares ( make these the same color as the corner squares)
  • 4 x 3½” squares (make these in 4 contrasting colors)

Place one of the first lot of squares on top of the contrasting color squares. Repeat this with the other squares.

Make sure you have right sides together

Draw a diagonal line on each of the top squares.

Sew a quarter inch seam along each side of the line.

Once sewn, cut along that drawn line. You should now have two pieces of fabric. Open each out and press flat. You should now have 8 half square triangles.

Trim each of the squares to measure 3" x 3". We have instructions on how to do this on our blog.

Lay out the block as per the image below.

Lay out all the pieces as per the image below.

Sew the pieces in the top and bottom rows together. For the middle row, sew the two side pieces first on each side and then attach each piece to the middle square. You should now have three rows.

To complete the block, simply sew the three pieces together ensuring you line up the seams perfectly.

The block is now complete.
