I live in Idaho and winters can get down to -11 so this is how I protect my roses or other plants. This will work no matter the size of the bush and will work on any plant that you want to protect from the freezing cold. Make a cylinder out of chicken wire or other wire to place around your rose bush and then fill the wire cage with leaves straw or any other dry vegetation. Make sure to fill in around the base of the plant from the ground to about 6 inches up the plant really well this is where the cold will hurt the plant the most

If you live in a milder climate, you do not need to do much. I am in Zone 9 and just trim back a bit and they pop back up in spring.
Yes, I am also in Zone 9, try to keep them away from the open, maybe under cover if they are in containers, otherwise, just prune them and wait....JMO
