Hi depends on what your wall to wall carpet is made of. If its newer and a nylon type or made of olefin it. It can even be cleaned with light bleach. Etc. Wool. No.

The majority of carpet dirt is just dirt! But can sometimes be mixed w oils from clay. I found that my former nylon carpet could be shampooed with a light water mix of blue dawn dishwas cleaner to break down oils. And a light mix in of bleach. It was a pale grayish white. No pattern. Test an unseen small area first to be sure.

The true way to clean a carpet is to RINSE it a out 5 times un fresh water. Sucking out all the accumulation of dirt and grime. Best wishes.

We purchased a Rug Doctor all in one. It has a front piece for carpets and a front piece for hard floors. It really works great and is well worth it. It really does suck up the water, even on hardwood type flooring and tiles, so that they are dry very quickly. I love it, we have four dogs and it really lets you use it to really clean the floors whenever you want because it is so easy to use. The muddy foot prints are gone in nothing flat. You can get upholstery attachments for it, too. I hope this helps you, Judy!
