They might be okay. It depends on how soon the ground freezes where you live. Here's a video that is about that exact subject. I usually do mine in the spring, but I have done them in the fall and usually they come up. Just watch the spot next spring and if you don't see them, transplant some pieces from another hosta plant. If you're planning to transplant the entire plant, I'd leave a little bit where it is just in case there is a problem. Once the new ones come up, you can dig up the rest of the parent plant. Hostas I want to the few plants that can be divided most time to be here. They may look even in the summertime unhappy after planting them. But they will perk up.
