How to protect my red maple trees?

A buck (deer) used my maple trees (3) to rub his velvet off his new horns. They are about 4 inches in diameter I hope the trees don't die

If the deer has not rubbed down too far into the bark of the tree you may be ok. If the marks are deep it may kill the tree or make it more susceptible to disease. Time will tell. You can put a plastic wrap around the tree or make a wire mesh fence tube around each tree.

Consensus seems to wrap chicken wire around it to keep further damage for the year. If is isn't too serious it should heal. They got a pine in my back yard and took off all of the bark all the way around for about two feet. It has healed over and it was a small tree, only about 4 inches in diameter. Others suggest spraying tree with something smelly as deer do not like scents.
