Your best bet is to make sure you have enough drainage holes. Adding some soil mixture that swells with moisture also traps and holds water specifically for these kinds of planter boxes.
Take some washers that fit over some small screws (flat and wide best). Get a large plastic trash bag, cut it to the size you need. Push the screws with the washers on them thru the plastic and drill into the back side of the planter near the top. Drill two small holes (1/8”) under the previous screws with washers (say about a 1/2” lower) slide wire ties from bread loafs when done with them into the holes. Unroll the plastic when you need it, & roll it up when you don’t. Use the wire ties to hold the roll in place onto the topside of the planter. You can put Velcro tabs on the plastic to hold your plastic where you need it. Use the Velcro that comes with adhesive already on it. Enjoy, because you made it yourself. 3D
Hi Wynona: Perhaps you can drill holes in the flower boxes about an inch or so from the bottom. This will allow any water to drain out, and still keep some water in for the plants. This is what I do, and it works great :) If you put something on top of the box, you may stifle the growth of the flowers and/or make a home for mold and/or mildew.

We let the birds put of their pen during the day. A few of them like to scratch the dirt out of some of the flower pots and beds. Is there a safe chicken repellent?
