I assume you're talking about small amounts of grass? You can spray vinegar on pieces that pop up in sidewalks, flower borders, etc. It will work best though when it's sunny and warm.
This past spring I used vinegar. Took 2 applications. Then I had the old grass cut out, Rototilled and spread new seed, then topped. Beautiful new lawn of fescue and clover.
if you are like me, you want to get rid of large expanses of grass so you can have something else there. In that case, cover it with something that will kill it. Cardboard and then mulch on top is effective and looks good. An old tarp, an old baby inflatable pool, and a sandbox - these do not look nice, but are also effective. When the grass has given up the fight, remove whichever cover you went with and plant something there that will never need to be mowed.
When I wanted to plant a garden where there was a lawn, I couldn't even get a shovel in the ground. So I covered the grass with newspaper, then cardboard, then black plastic. After I was sure the grass was dead, I took up the plastic and put down a thick layer of mulch. After a month or so, the ground was soft enough to dig holes for shrubs and perennials, right through the disintegrated cardboard.
