Fairly easy to be honest. Make sure it is planted at the cotrect depth for one, make sure that you have planted it soon enough to make sure teh roots have established prior to the first freeze and then after first freeze you can simnply cut back and cover with hay/straw for a little extra insulation until Spring, when you can remove and place in a compost pile.
I think you need to plant them early in the spring or summer, so that they can establish a good root system before the cold weather comes. At this point, for Zone 5, it may be too late to plant them outside and have them over-winter.
